Jim Valvano Timeline
March 10, 1946: Born to Rocco and Angelina Valvano in New York City, NY.
April 1963: Graduated from Seaford High School.
1964-1967: Went to Rutgers University. Got a degree in English. Won the Senior Athlete of the Year in 1967. He led the Scarlet Knights to a 3rd place finish in NIT.
1967: Jim and Pam get married.
1968-1969: Head Basketball Coach at John Hopkins. Led the school to its first winning season in 24 years with a 10-9 record.
1969: Jim and Pam have there first daughter, Nicole.
1972: Jim and Pam have there second daughter, Jamie.
1972- 1975: Head Basketball Coach at Bucknell University. Had a record of 33-42.
1975-1980: Head Basketball Coach Iona College. Had two NCAA appearances and finished with a 99-47 record.
1978: Jim and Pam have there third daughter, Lee Ann.
1980-1990: Head Men’s Basketball Coach for North Carolina State University.
April 1983: North Carolina State won the ACC Tournament and the NCAA National Basketball Championship. They beat Houston in the championship 54-52.
1986: Named Athletic Director of North Carolina State University.
1990: Signed with ABC/ESPN as Basketball Commentator/ Analyst
January 1992: Won Cable ACE Award for Commentator/Analyst for NCAA Basketball broadcasts.
June 1992: Diagnosed with terminal cancer.
November 1992: Returned to ESPN calling color commentary during pre-season NIT.
March 1993: Received the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage at ESPN’s first American Sports Awards-the ESPY’s. Announced the he had formed the Jimmy V fund which is to help with finding a cure for cancer.
April 1993: Died of metastatic cancer.
1993: Inducted into Rutgers’ Basketball Hall of Fame.
1999: Inducted into Hall of Distinguished Alumni at Rutgers University.
1999: Inducted into The New York City Basketball Hall of Fame.
2012: Joined North Carolina State Hall of Fame.
